About Us

History

The beautiful brick building we now call home was constructed in 1907 as a substation for the Puget Sound Power and Light Company. It provided power for the Interurban Electric Trolley that ran from Seattle to Olympia, as well as providing street lighting and local power to the Puyallup Valley well into the 1950’s.

As automobiles became more prevalent and electricity demands grew, the substation couldn’t keep up with demand, and it transitioned into a storage facility in 1957. By 1969, it was completely abandoned.

In 1994, Tacoma architect Dusty Trail purchased the property, and the elegant brick building underwent extensive renovation and adaptive reuse to become the Powerhouse Restaurant & Brewery it is today.

Long-time patrons and home brewers, brothers Dan and Jonathan Tweten, purchased the Powerhouse in 2013. Today, the Powerhouse remains a locally-owned brewpub focused on serving food and cutting-edge craft beers in a unique, electric environment. Remnants of the past and antiques from the substation days can be seen throughout the space— we invite you to come take a look and see what you can find!

“The building is irreplaceable. We are locally owned and operated, and we offer food and beer that we ourselves drink on a regular basis. Not corporate, not pretentious, but interesting and unique.”
